SECURITY AT THE COURT AND LAW DAY
There is security screening at all courthouses. This means that when you enter the building, you will be asked to empty your pockets and step through a metal detector. Any handbags, back-packs, briefcases or other materials that you have with you will be placed through an x-ray machine. The process is very similar to the security that you would encounter at an airport. It can sometimes cause line-ups to form at the court entrance during busy times of the day. Therefore, it is recommended that you arrive early.
The following are examples of items that may not be brought in to the courthouse:

2020 Trials / Events
Family Trial (11:15 am & 2:30 pm)
"Frozen Family II - Queen Elsa v. Princess Anna"
Queen Elsa and Princess Anna are back at it with their sibling rivalry.
First they asked, do you want to build a snow man? But little did they know all the special things Olaf needed to grow and stay cool! They both want what’s best for their Olaf, but they can’t agree on what he needs or who is going to pay for it. To top it off, Queen Elsa was so busy traveling between Arendelle, The Enchanted Forest and Ahtohalla this year, she might have missed some important payments for Olaf. The sisters have come to court as a last resort to ask the judge to decide on Olaf’s special expenses.
Can the royal family keep it chill in court? Will one of the sisters be singing victory? Or will both sisters be FROZEN in their tracks!

Constitutional Appeal (1:45 pm)
Not in My Back Yard!
Five young men were gathered in the private backyard of an Edmonton townhouse when three police officers arrived. Two of the officers immediately questioned the young men and requested documentary proof of their identities. A third officer questioned the accused, Mr. Hasim, demanding that he produce identification and asking him what was in the satchel he was carrying. At that point, Mr. Hasim fled, was pursued and arrested, and found to be in possession of a firearm, drugs and cash.
Was the search of Mr. Hasim, and the seizure of the firearm, drugs and cash by the police officers a breach of Mr Hasim’s Charter rights? And can the firearm, drugs, and cash be used as evidence against him in court?
Come to the Constitutional Appeal at Law Day to find out!

Children's Mock Arbitration (10:15 am)
Presented by the ADR Institute of Alberta (ADRIA)
"Batman v. Robin - Be a Conflict Superhero, not a Bully!"
After a routine night of keeping the streets of Edmonton safe, Batman spots Joker about to rob the circus tent after a very successful opening night. He tells Robin of his plan to face the Joker, beat him up, and let him escape once again, so that the Dynamic Duo would have more opportunities to beat him up again. Robin feels that beating up the bad guys every single night is growing tiresome, and believes that instead, they should actually capture the Joker, call the police, help rehabilitate the Joker, and maybe understand his needs a bit better.
While arguing their points, the Joker was successful in his robbery and escapes once more. Batman and Robin are blaming each other, and a bitter argument has ensued. Robin thinks Batman is acting like a bully. Batman told Robin that he would be nothing without him. Feeling hurt, Robin has threatened to break their contract, leave the team, and become a new solo Superhero: NIghtwing. To settle their differences, they have agreed to try Arbitration - a form of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), to avoid the cost of a lengthy Court battle. Arbitration might just sort things out help them stay together as the Caped Crusaders. Who wins? Bat-buddy or Bat-Bully?

The Judge Franklin High School Mock Trial Competition (9:30 am – 3:30 pm)
This year's Law Day High School Mock Trials have students arguing a criminal matter involving whether the Defendant committed criminal negligence in failing to comply with the Fire Code in their rooming house. Here, one of the tenants on the second floor of a rental property died of smoke inhalation after a fire broke out. In arguing this case, students will explore landlords' duties and responsibilities on the issue of whether the fire resulted from the criminal negligence of the landlord.
In the months preceding the fire, the landlord received notice of several violations of the Fire Code, including the lack of fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in each of the three second-floor units. The Fire Prevention Officer similarly noted the presence of a plug-in hot plate in the deceased's room. The other tenants offer conflicting evidence on the efforts taken by the landlord to comply with the Fire Code and to make the requested changes flagged by the Fire Prevention Officer.
